Frequently Asked Questions:
Push to My Handheld
What is "Push to My Handheld?"
Push to My Handheld is a feature of the WeSync service which allows you or your webmaster to make selected Calendars and Contact Lists available on your web site. Visitors to your web site can subscribe to your Calendars and Contact Lists with a mouse click that "pushes" that Calendar or Contact List to their handheld computers. By clicking on a Push to My Handheld button on your web site, visitors who are current WeSync users are automatically subscribed to your Calendar or Contact List. Visitors who are not current WeSync users are prompted to sign up to the free WeSync service in order to subscribe to your Calendar or Contact List.
I don't have a handheld. Can I still access Push to My Handheld Resources?
For sharing Calendars, the WeSync Desktop Viewer can be used independently of a handheld. You can use the Desktop Viewer to create, edit, view, and share Calendars in Synchronization with the WeSync Server. You cannot currently use WeSync to share Contact Lists without a handheld.
For Publishers:
What do I need in order to share data using Push to My Handheld?
First, you must be a WeSync member. As a WeSync member, you may use our free service and software to create, view, and share multiple Calendars and Contact Lists (Resources) on your handheld. Second, you must have a Read-Only resource that you wish to share to people who see your web site. Third, you need a web site on which to post the Push to My Handheld link.
How do I Share a Resource using the Push to My Handheld feature?
- Publish the resource you wish to share "Read-Only."
- Log-in to your personal section of the WeSync web site, then click on the Push to My Handheld graphic. You will see a current list of your Read-Only resources.
- Click on the "Push" button next to the resource you wish to share. You may either send an email to your webmaster with a link to the HTML code from which your customized Push to My Handheld link is generated or view the code yourself.
- Copy and paste this code into the HTML code for your web site at the point at which you wish the button to appear.
What is the difference between publishing a Resource using Push to My Handheld and sharing information in a Community?
The WeSync service enables you to share resources either to a Community, to which members must be invited, or to the public using Push to My Handheld. For a comparison of these features, check out the Sharing Resource Chart
Can other people edit my Resource?
No. For a resource to be published using Push to My Handheld, it must be marked Read-Only, meaning that users can view it but cannot make any changes to it. This resource cannot be modified by anyone other than its publisher.
Can I change how a Resource is published after I make it available using Push to My Handheld?
Push to My Handheld resources must be published Read-Only. If a resource is shared using Push to My Handheld, you will not be able to change its publishing status to Private or Read-Write. If you no longer wish to share a resource using Push to My Handheld, unpublish the Resource in the Desktop Viewer or on the Handheld. To share it to a community instead, simply re-publish it.
Once I share a Resource using Push to My Handheld, how can I unshare it?
To unshare a Calendar that has been made available with Push to My Handheld, you must unpubish the resource. After unpublishing the resource, sync to the WeSync Server during a Hotsync of your handheld. After this sync, people will be unable to subscribe to your resource through the Push to My Handheld link on your web site. Current subscribers will no longer have access to the resource.
If you delete the Push to My Handheld button on your web site, new visitors will no longer be able to subscribe to the resource, but current users will continue to be subscribed to the resource. If you un-share a resource then wish to re-publish that resource in the future using Push to My Handheld, you'll need to repeat the publishing process using fresh HTML code generated on the WeSync web site.
For Subscribers:
How do I subscribe to a Push to My Handheld Resource?
Click on a Push to My Handheld button on a publisher's web site. Enter your WeSync user name and password and click "Subscribe." The next time you Sync to the WeSync Server, you'll have access to that resource on your handheld (Calendars and Contact Lists) and/or on the Desktop (Calendars). When the publisher updates the resource, it will be updated for you automatically the next time you Sync.
Where can I see which Push to My Handheld Resources I'm subscribed to?
The Push to My Handheld resources to which you are subscribed are listed in the "My Public Resources" section of the WeSync Website. Like any other resources shared using WeSync, the resources themselves are viewable in the WeSync Desktop Viewer, wsCalendars, and wsContacts.
Why can't I edit Resources subscribed from Push to My Handheld?
For a resource to be published using Push to My Handheld, it must be marked Read-Only, meaning that users can view it but cannot make any changes to it. The resource cannot be modified by anyone other than its Publisher.
How do I unsubscribe from a Push to My Handheld Resource?
In the "My Public Resources" section of the WeSync website, accessible after you log-in to WeSync, un-check the "status" box next to the Resource you wish to un-subscribe from. At your next Hotsync with Sync to WeSync Server, that Resource will be removed.
You can also simply delete a subscribed resource using the Desktop Viewer or on your handheld.
I'm in the same Community as a Push to My Handheld Publisher. I see that person's published Resources in both "My Public Resources" and "My Communities" on the website. Why is this?
If you subscribe to a resource using Push to My Handheld that has also been shared to a Community which you are a member of, you will see that resource in "My Public Resources" and "My Communities" on the WeSync website. You are only subscribed to the actual resource once. If you unsubscribe from that resource in either category, you will unsubscribe from the resource entirely.
